Seamist Studio children had a Mandarin language session during group time with a Chinese educator today. We started with a song “Hello”, which we sang along with some actions. Then the children reviewed the names of fruits in Mandarin, such as “apple” “pear” “grape” “strawberry” “watermelon.” Some of the children received an artificial fruit, as encouragement, when they repeated the name of the fruit correctly.

We also sang the “Happy birthday” song together in Mandarin, while Peter*, one of the children who is fluent in Mandarin, stood in the front of the group and lead the singing.

All children showed their interest in learning another language and thoroughly enjoyed having a familiar educator teach them new skills.

In the afternoon the children made a birthday card for our sponsored child, Riya*, who is from Nepal. The children were excited about making this little girl happy with this card on her birthday and we had a great discussion about different things she could be doing on her birthday in another country.
