Willow Walk Kindergarten children have been involved in recycling practices throughout the year. Every meal time the children have been encouraged to collect fruit scraps for our worm farm. Children use cups for drinking water at meal times and have been encouraged to collect excess water in a bucket. At the end of the day they use the excess water to water the plants in the garden. Children use the recycling bin in the room on a daily basis for scrap paper and cardboard. They have been encouraged to sort materials into a recycle bin or into a garbage bin. Children are aware to press the half button when using the toilet. They are mindful to use less water when washing their hands – they count up to ten while washing.
During recycling week the children learnt the Three R’s:
• Reduce – reduce the amount of things you buy and use and you will have less to throw away
• Reuse – keep using the same things as many times as you can
• Recycle – find new ways to use old things
They learnt the importance of trees. Each time we use paper we are using part of a tree because paper is made out of the materials from a tree. By practicing the Three Rs we can look after our trees and our environment.
Throughout the week, we provided old wrapping paper, empty cardboard boxes and plastic bottle lids as an open ended experience for children to reuse the materials.
Some children were interested in cutting the pictures out of the wrapping paper. Then they pasted the cut out pictures in their scrap books. Other children showed an interest in creating tow trucks, towers, bird nests and super hero cars using the boxes and bottle lids. The children demonstrated well developed fine motor skills as well as they displayed dispositions for learning such as confidence, creativity, commitment, persistence and imagination while engaging with these experiences.
First and foremost, the children have become immersed in numerous learning experiences that provided them the opportunity to utilize and strengthen their knowledge of the significance of recycling for a healthier planet Earth.
We will continue to use recyclable resources and practice recycling in Willow Walk Kindergarten.
