On Wednesday 6th June, the children in Moonglade Studio enjoyed a STEM incursion, presented by an organisation called Starting Bright.
The theme was ‘Little Beasts for Little Scientists’. A highly trained scientist named Elena, who works directly with young children, explained scientific concepts through hands on learning and practical experiences.
The Science Module included – What are insects? What is entomology? What do scientists wear when they study insects in the field?
The Technology and Engineering Module included – Children interacting with wriggling solar cell bugs. They also learned how to make a bug hotel and participated in a group activity to make the life cycle of a butterfly.
The Mathematics Module included – Children practicing their numeracy skills by categorizing and counting legs of the various bugs.
The children came away having learned some interesting facts; insects have six legs and use their antennae to smell food and feel textures. They really enjoyed sticking items onto the big poster that displayed the life cycle of a butterfly. Incidental learning experiences like these often stay with children for a very long time and they tend to connect concepts at a later date when encountering bugs or insects in the yard or watching or reading something about bugs or insects on the TV or in a book. Your little one’s brain is always at the ready to absorb information and store away facts to recall at a later date; it is important to seize opportunities as they arise.

- EYLF Outcome 4: Children and confident and involved learners
- EYLF Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators
