One of our learning spaces in Seamist Studio is a reading area. The space is set up to encourage children to sit down on the mat or seats provided and read a book at any given time of the day. The books are rotated fortnightly according to children’s interests, ability and developmental needs (eg: a ‘potty book’ or a ‘dressing myself’ book).
The educators will often sit with the children and encourage them to gently turn the pages of a book or ask questions about the book or pictures. Sometimes the children will want the educator to read to them and other times they are happy narrating the story line as the educators listen and respond appropriately. Children demonstrate concentration, confidence and coordination as they are able to ‘read’ through an entire book or multiple pages and they also delight in recognising text or pictures from known nursery rhymes or familiar stories.
The educators in Seamist will continue to offer the children a print rich environment by providing a variety of texts, words and signs around the room for the children to refer to and engage with.
