In Willow Walk, the children have been having many discussions about trees, plants and farmers and the importance of eating well for your body. To extend on their learning the educators decided to make a lemonade together with some home grown lemons Educator Margarita had brought in. All the children participated and were excited to see what the end result would produce. Each child had to squeeze a lemon and assist in preparing the lemonade. The children are building basic numeracy skills by measuring, pouring, reading the recipe. They were encouraged to try different ingredients and flavors. They also learned about eating healthy, and how healthy foods make a body grow. They used all their senses to complete the experience by holding a lemon, smelling the scent of lemon, watching the processes and finally tasting the lemonade.

Experiences like cooking provide opportunities to gain a sense of accomplishment. Spending time in the kitchen with the children can foster an interest in healthy food and cooking that will last for life!

We will be providing more opportunities for involving the children in cooking experiences as the year progresses.
