Strap on your seatbelts, turn on the radio and drive over to Sovereign Hill to celebrate Christmas this weekend! Since June, its been running its ‘Christmas in July’: Winter Wonderlights 2019 program, an amalgamation of experiences which includes performances, parades, food and drinks.
To Do
There are several shows and activities running through the day centered around the theme of Christmas and celebrations. Beauty and the Beast shows several times a day, while St Nicholas & Old Horse, a traditional Christmas Mummers’ play shows once a day.
There’s also The Gingerbread Man, a lovely story told through shadow puppets and a parade of Redcoat soldiers who will march, drill and fire their muskets. At several points during the day, there’ll be ‘snowfalls’ and a brass band performing Christmas carols.
In the evening, the Winter Wonderlights light up the Main Street as do the Tunnel of Lights, which will be a wonderful place to take photos.
What’s Christmas without presents? You and your little ones can also pay a visit to the Craft Activities station to make a gingerbread man or a miner’s cottage to take home!
To Eat?
There are several restaurants and cafes in Sovereign Hill; look out for the European Christmas Fare Marquee which will serve Christmas themed food in keeping with festivities.
To Stay?
Sovereign Hill is an hour to an hour and a half’s drive from Melbourne, so if the drive seems like too much to handle, there are plenty of places to stay in the area; ranging between $240-260 for a family room.
It will be a wonderful family experience to spend time exploring a variety of experiences.
Visit the Winter Wonderlights website for more information about the experience!
