The children in Moonglade have been participating in box construction activities. The educators have been discussing with the children the different ways that boxes can be used which led to further discussion about reusing and recycling materials in our world.
Providing children with objects and materials that have an open ended purpose opens up a child’s to creative expression and lateral thinking. The educators have observed the children engaging in much discussion about what to do with the boxes, brainstorming ideas, assessing each idea and working on problem solving skills when readjusting designs or figuring out what is going to work and what won’t work.
It’s a fascinating process to observe. The imaginary play, focus, patience and reasoning that’s involved in group projects are vital skills that our children will need as they enter formal schooling and in later life, the work force. We always embrace opportunities and resources that encourage development in these areas for the children as there are so many benefits!
