In Seamist this week, children have starting showing enjoyment when participating in small group play and shared experiences.
A few children enjoyed themselves jumping off a raised plank of wood, outdoors.
These children had a fantastic time playing together. It was not just having fun together, they counted together (as they were guided to count 1,2,3 before jumping), took turns jumping off the plank, and called each other’s names when it was their time to jump. The children evidently enjoyed this small group experience and learned simple social, reciprocal and self-regulation skills.
One of the main benefits of participating in a group activity for children is learning how to become part of a team. Team work promotes problem solving to get to a common goal. Another positive aspect of group play for children is the development of social skills. Children will naturally learn how to negotiate and compromise and they will understand that not everything will always go their own way. Equally as important, they will learn to assert themselves and ensure they receive their turn.
There were so many valuable life lessons from such a simple activity and the educators were so proud of the children taking initiative with this experience and also how they conducted themselves to ensure it was fun and fair for everybody involved!
