The 2018 Children’s Week theme is based on Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that children have the right to say what they think and have their opinions taken into account.

An example of this right in Action can be seen at Aurora Early Education, which has a Children’s Advisory Board made up of six to eight children.

“At Aurora Early Education we feel it is important that we involve children in the decision-making processes,” chief executive Sheela Edwards said.

Meetings are held at least once a term and more recently, the board met to develop a Code of Conduct for the centre.

Mrs Edwards said the children made some wonderful contributions with a focus on making people feel safe, looking after the toys, caring for the environment and treating each other nicely.

One child said: “If you run and don’t pay attention you might get hurt. It’s kind to share toys. Don’t step on plants as they could die. Play nicely with friends, then it makes you happy too.”

Another said: “We need to sometimes use walking feet and sometimes use running feet. Letting other people play with you is showing kindness.”

The Code of Conduct, as written by the children, is now available for all to view at the centre’s foyer and its online portal.
