Following on from National Tree Day in late July, the children and educators had a discussion about making an edible garden and it was decided that to tie in with National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day in August, they would design a Bush Tucker Garden. The plants that were chosen included Peppermint, Lemon Myrtle, Bush Cherry and Lily Pilly.

The children helped to place the plants into the garden bed and then water them. The also made a beautiful border with small red pebbles.

Aurora's very own Bush Tucker Garden!

Young children enjoy gardening projects and it was great for them to be involved in all aspects of the project from planning to planting.

Gardening engages all the senses, encourages healthy eating, teaches where food comes from and how it grows and enhances fine motor development.

It also teaches values like responsibility and patience and links to disciplines such as botany, biology, chemistry and science.
