In Willow Walk Kindergarten, the children have been learning how to use scissors correctly. The simple act of using scissors requires children to integrate a number of different skill sets. Not only is it developing their fine motor skills through movement and control of the muscles in their hands and fingers, it also requires them to have well developed hand-eye coordination, patience and concentration which are important skills for reading and writing later on.

Working with children when they are learning to use scissors gives the educators an insight into a child’s hand preference (left or right) and also a child’s concentration span and attention to detail, which are not always evident with less focused activities.
