In the Moonglade Studio outdoor environment, the educators are always looking for various resources to challenge the children and build their skill level with gross motor skills and co-ordination. This week the children have been enjoying the walking stilts.
Some of the children have required assistance form the educators to step onto the stilts, especially both of them at the same time and then balance. They are then encouraged to attempt to take steps and walk with them. Often the children fall off a few times before mastering the required skills to use them effectively; however what is wonderful about this sort of learning experience is that the children watch and learn from each other and are more likely to take risks if they see their friends are also requiring assistance and are not overly confident.
Children continually use play to investigate and explore new ideas, and this is often how new skills are developed and enhanced. The children also feel a sense of great pride when they master something new and enjoy celebrating their achievements with their friends. It is equally pleasing to see children taking risks and showing persistence while developing their skills and abilities.
